COMME des GARCONS WHITE DRAMA EXHIBITION
COMME des GARÇONS White Drama
13 April - 7 October 2012
The Galliera Museum's extra mural program continues at Les Docks - Cité de la Mode et du Design with two concurrently running exhibitions: one on Cristobal Balenciaga and the other on Rei Kawakubo COMME des GARÇONS.
Always one to shun convention, Rei Kawakubo has metamorphosed the classic fashion show and re written the codes of high fashion.
In White Drama with it's quasi- monochrome models, she dramatizes life's big events: birth, marriage, death and transcendence.
White Drama is whiteness - pure, ceremonial white of every hue.
Budding flowers, layered handkerchiefs, white-flecked material, lace insets by christening robes, an obi-bow belt, overcoats and tall hats redolent of the Holy Week processions in Seville, a wedding gown like the silky cocoon of an insect and fabrics, both untreated and refined, shiny and mat, opaque and sheer, which taken on a vibrant life of their own, drawing on the natural vitality of the animal, mineral and vegetable worlds.
White Drama is indeed a feat; it is a masterful fashion architecture from which there emanates an intangible almost spiritual dimension to transport you to the unique world of Rei Kawakubo.

KAZUYO SEJIMA SPATIAL DESIGN FOR COMME des GARÇONS

Kazuyo Sejima has achieved a revolutionary style with the use of minimal, transparent forms and materials in architectural programs that awaken connectivity with place and with users from fresh perspectives—a style she has demonstrated in the Louvre-Lens and 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. In Sejima’s spaces, the revolutionary character of Comme des Garçons will crackle with new life. Composed of transparent interlocking volumes of varying sizes where dazzling illusions of perspectival depth intersect, Sejima’s installation will alter viewers’ perceptions of clothing and its relationship with their body.

MNEMOSYNE VIDEO FOR DAPHNE PERFUME
"…it is something of a sensory path, evoking snapshots of one's past as you smell it. It has the power to transport you from the room in which you stand, to a place buried within the depths of your memory. I wanted to demonstrate that scent can take you on a journey.
In making this film I wanted to avoid any element of exclusivity. I believe that ideas are free. That in order to engage with an idea, you should share it. The prospect of strangers stumbling across my film online and perhaps passing it on, is gratifying. I'm not a commercial person.
It is the creative process that fascinates me.
This is not an advertisement for the perfume, it is a film inspired by the essence of scent."
